AUTOSOL’s Modbus Slave software offers users the ability to configure their newer PLC/RTU devices to connect to their legacy HMIs specific modbus needs, such as the Modicon RTU 584/984 Modbus register set.

High performance communication software must be adaptable, so legacy and new monitoring equipment can work together to deliver and collect data. It must also be configurable to ensure multiple manufacturer devices can respond to one another.  This particular Modbus protocol, Modicon RTU 584/984, uses the memory layout of the 584/984 models of the original Gould Modicon Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) — the first PLC on the market.  Due to Modbus Slave’s flexibility, users can configure it to use the memory layout of the Modicon RTU 584/984 to match your HMI needs.

Field data is transferred to the HMI using the Modicon RTU 584/984 register set in a binary format.

Register Sets in AUTOSOL’s Modbus Slave software — such as the Modicon RTU 584/984– can be configured and added from the Register Records window by utilizing various options. Users can select Auto Fill to choose between common register sets and populate the current register record with the same values. Modbus Slave also offers Message Format Flexibility for users to select between binary, RTU or ASCII formats.

Customers with an existing HMI — which can only handle Modbus protocol, will often swap out their devices to ones that speak Modbus, which can be an expensive solution to their problem. Users will also use a physical Modbus slave, a device which translates a specific protocol into Modbus at a specific RTU or PLC– an expensive option as one device is needed per site.
